LAND at Lowsonford

LAND at Legthsmans

Travelling between Leeds and Cornwall last week I decided to take a detour and visit one of the LAND sculptures created by Sir Antony Gormley for The Landmark Trust in celebration of its Fiftieth Anniversary.

LAND comprises five life-size standing sculptures by Antony Gormley cast in iron and installed at 5 Landmark Trust sites across the UK for 12 months from 16 May 2015. The works have been conceived in direct response to each location :

Saddell Bay, Mull of Kintyre, Argyll and Bute, Scotland

South West Point, Lundy, Bristol Channel, Devon

Clavell Tower, Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset

Martello Tower, Aldeburgh, Suffolk

Lengthsman’s Cottage, Lowsonford, Warwickshire

In 2009 I stayed in Lengthsman’s Cottage for a few days and enjoyed visiting nearby National Trust properties and a Royal Shakespeare Company performance at Stratford. Best of all for me is always staying in the actual property itself. Although it was early in the season we did witness several narrowboaters manoeuvring through the lock.

The week before last I sat on Ted’s Bench (dedicated to Ted: the last inhabitant of the cottage before the Trust took it over) by the cottage to eat my picnic lunch and watch the reactions of other visitors to LAND at Lowsonford.

Everyone has a different reaction to LAND

From Lowsonford I moved on to a tea shop, also by the Stratford Canal, not far away at Lapworth.

A little different from the usual Gormley self portrait figures. Rather reminds me of “The Thing” from Marvel’s Ffantastic Four”, albeit a little slimmer

Just catching up on a few previous posts here — well, more than a few. This one just makes me long to visit, as well as the Port Elliott one.
